It’s because at a med spa, you get the extra care and benefit of having a medical doctor involved, as opposed to simply having estheticians present. This is how a med spa is different than a regular spa. Both offer cosmetic beauty treatments, but it’s important for med spas to have a physician on hand.
Why Do Med Spas Require Doctors?
It’s because many treatments that are offered at med spas, such as laser skin resurfacing and laser hair removal, have a small chance of risk that would need the assistance of a professional physician. This is rare, but it’s wise for a medical doctor to be there in the event an issue occurs.
While many physicians at med spas administer laser and injectable treatments themselves, very often the spa’s nurses will carry out the treatments under the approval of the doctor. This is completely fine—if the doctor is still on hand.
No Doctor? No Thanks
Although anywhere that provides injectables or laser treatments is legally required to operate under a professional physician, that physician doesn’t have to physically be there in order for the med spa to operate.
You’ll see this often advertised as a med spa having a “supervising doctor,” in which the real owners of the med spa will approach a medical doctor and ask him or her to represent their med spa in return for a fee. This basically means that sometimes, medical doctors’ licenses are simply borrowed in order for a med spa to perform treatments—and the doctor is never really there.
A med spa—or anywhere—that is offering laser treatments or injectables without a doctor present is a place to avoid. Absolutely a nurse can do these procedures for you. However, having a medical doctor right there nearby is extremely important. He or she will be able to offer expert help in the case something out of the ordinary happening.

It’s crucial to find a med spa that employs a very involved, caring medical doctor. Not only will he or she be conveniently available for problems; they will also be around to oversee the work of their nurses and estheticians.
